The Khobar Quins are a very important team to me personally and to RuckinRugby. They formed from the merger of players from Al-Khobar Eagles and Khamis Mushayt Quins in 2007, the year I arrived in Saudi Arabia with my family having played no rugby for 8 years. I played with the Quins in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and then played for them in my first ever Dubai 7s tournament, which just happened to be the last one to ever be held in the original Dubai Exile stadium in Dubai – a momentous occasion. The Khobar Quins often had a worryingly short supply of players at training, and sometimes even up to a few minutes before kick off on match day – but then they would appear, – often against advice from doctors (and wives) to play one more game for their beloved Khobar.
The website was the first RuckinRugby website for a club outside of the UK and it was the launch pad for my sales pitch to the AGRFU and then on, to the Dubai Exiles, Arabian Potbellies, Falcons Ladies, TOA Dubai, Jeddah, Q8 Saracens and Q8 Nomads and I hope more to come.
After leaving Saudi Arabia I was informed that come the Dubai 7s, I would still have to play for the Quins as you can never leave … and they were right. I was even lucky enough to get put in a group with my new club – the Arabian Potbellies – so they could delight on rucking me off the pitch!
Khobar Quins are a fantastic club and they love their rugby, especially when it involves a short trip over the causeway to Bahrain and a ‘real’ beer, or maybe even a flight to Dubai. We are already discussing the web changes for 2010/11 with Zakir and I am sure the club will be around for a good number of years to come yet. I am proud to have served this great club.
