The Arabian Potbellies joined the Arabian Gulf Championship in 2008 but are better known for the touring prowess as a vets outfit and are legends on the circuit. A new, slimmer and younger generation can be seen at training and are occasionally blooded on the Vets 10s circuit so the club is certainly welcoming to all ages, shapes and sizes. The only pre-requisite to becoming a ‘belly’ is that you must love your rugby!
I spent 18 months in Dubai and whilst I was there, the Arabian Potbellies were my club and they are a truly outstanding group to train, play and party with. RuckinRugby provided their website back in the 2008 season and we have been with them ever since, now preparing for our third season together. We hope to move on to make merchandise available online as the Potbelly shirts are legendary too.
The founding fathers of this club are the – even MORE infamous – Honk Kong Potbellied Pigs RFC. The original logo was adapted to feature an arab drinking a beer whilst holding on to his trusty camel ….. we decided to go for a rebrand and kept the camel, and the beer – adding in a palm tree for that desert feel. Everything about the potbellies is Pink, from the kit to the beautiful, silk dinner jackets sported at the numerous social events and so the website was always going to have to feature ‘Hot Pink’ as a theme – I think we did them proud.
