The Baram Trophy, probably one of the oldest rugby tournaments organised in Borneo since 1978 during the high time of expatriates in Miri, Sarawak for the oil and gas under Miri Rugby Football Club (KRFM) then. The trophy, was named after the the Baram River in the fourth division of the state where the “orang Ulu” or the upper river people are originated from.
Teams from Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Indonesia and around Malaysia came for this tournament. Early teams those days were like the (British Arm Forces) Flying Gukris, the Panaga Pirates, Panaga Crocs, Malaysia Air force-Black Hawks, Balik Papan Rugby, Royal Brunei Yatch club Rugby club-the Yatchies Rugby, Malaysia Arm Force, Malaysia Royal Police-PDRM, Royal Selangor Rugby Club and Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Club. Most of these teams had generally lifted the Baram Trophy. The first Baram Trophy was won by the Panaga Crocs (after three consecutive win) early in the 90s. Since the early millenium, Miri Division Rugby Union is currently keeping the tradition of 15s rugby tournament cum carnival on but biannually due to lack of funds. Nevertheless, Miri Rugby continue it’s legacy for development of rugby in state.
This year’s tournament is called the “Cash Sweep Baram Challenge AKA YB Datuk Seri Peter Chin 26th Baram Trophy 2010″ after our main sponsor that will be held on the 2nd – 3rd October 2010 at stadium Miri.
