I have been in business on my own for some 6 years now and I am well aware that this means taking the odd non-payment on the chin – such is life. However, Mr. Jeremy Beynon is a different fish. Jeremy Beynon and his company/website – whatever – Heavensgame.com took me for £1500, which is bad enough, but it is more the way in which they did it.
Back in July I saw an advert on linkedin asking for a social media manager to do 20 hours a week for Heavensgame.com – so I instantly dropped him a line, having pinged him a few news items in the past from the Arabian Gulf and Asia etc. He instantly acknowledged, and hired me. Job done. A quick skype call later and I was away – spending several hours a day blogging on his website and ‘digging’ articles on his behalf etc – we got Heavensgame up to 3rd place on page 1 of Google for the search term ‘Rugby World Cup’ …. no mean feat.
We decided upon payment every 2 weeks for around £320. The first invoice fell foul to a ‘banking error’ as he added an incorrect IBAN number to the transfer. No problem, easily done.
Invoice 1 got added to invoice 2 another 2 weeks later and this time it was simply …. forgotten. Whoops.
Invoice 1 + 2 + 3 was sent for what had now been 6 weeks work and this found Jeremy ill. his wife answered my email with:
“Hi Max, I am sorry about the money situation, I will deal with it right now. Thanks again, Kath.”
Yup – you guessed it … nothing turned up. Although he did follow it up himself with a heartfelt:
“Hello Max, I hope all is well with you, I am back in the land of the living/working and am finally off the drip, back home etc….
I undersand things have lagged since we spoke, I will bring everything uptodate on Tuesday (including $$), apologies for the delay. Kath (wife) said that you have been keeping the daily blog going, thanks – I really appreciate that. Talk soon. Jeremy”
At this stage I was also covering HIS half of the BLOG too as he was ‘ill’. So – I decided enough was enough, Jeremy was quite clearly a liar and a cheat and so I sent him this:
“Good morning guys, I am attaching my usual DIGG etc for you. I am also attaching my third invoice. Guys, right now I am extremely busy 7 days a week and more and more work is coming in so I am having to prioritise – unfortunately, like everyone else my business has to perform the very basic functions and that is ‘money in for work out’. I love doing this work for you and being a part of heavensgame but I have still yet to see a single penny in payment and I have been annoying my wife for 8 weeks by digging and blogging for you guys every evening until midnight sometimes and then first thing in the morning before even having breakfast … so something has to give.
I am a 100% straight character and I always give the benefit of the doubt, so I do hope that the invoices get paid at some point and that you ask me to continue with the work I have been doing – but for now I am going to have to stop and prioritise doing work for those who have paid and who continue to pay. Let me know your thoughts on this and whether or not you want me to continue after today.
I hope you are getting better Jeremy and wish you all the best for the future. Best regards, Max.”
Now – you would think that any kind of man – even a cheat, would read this and call it a day – you know – maybe explain his cashflow problems and suggest a compromise …. maybe, – maybe even attempt an apology? Sorry we haven’t paid you for 8 weeks work and lied on several occasions … ? Nope. On September 16th 2010, Jeremy Beynon of Heavensgame.com sent this:
“Hello Max, Apologies, all cash will be paid to your account on Friday, when I return home from hospital. Best regards Jeremy. Jeremy Beynon. Managing Director. Heavensgame.”
This was the last communication I had from Jeremy and I presume he thought that I was affluent enough to write off the money he owed me and take it no further. I can only presume that he figured with him in Sydney Australia and me in Devon, England – that there was nothing I would be able to do.
But – that isn’t me. That isn’t Max. That isn’t how I work.
The great thing about the ‘RuckinRugby’ side of my work is the people. I love rugby people, because wherever you go in the whole world, they are the same. Straight. Okay, you get a bit of banter – maybe even en route to the game, but once you’re warming up it all changes – you cannot fanny around on a rugby pitch like you can at football – you have to be on board, straight. Genuine.
I’d like to think that if anyone else had had an experience like this with Jeremy Beynon – then they would have written about it, so I could have had a heads up. More importantly – I want to make 100% sure that if ANYone ever looks to do any kind of work for this guy and/or his company in the future they get 100% payment up front or even better – they think better of it and tell him to ‘jog on’. I have instructed a debt recovery agency in NSW Australia but he is not answering phones or email.
I’d like to ask everyone who reads this and knows what a straight guy I am – to pass it on. Retweet it, Facebook it, Digg it … just use the buttons below. Forewarned is Forearmed and the last thing any of us needs in the current climate is 8 weeks unpaid work! many thanks for your help.
Please take a minute to add a comment and use the buttons above to re-distribute this post. Thanks, – Max.
Nice one Max, fed up of labour not being regarded as a chargeable item and therefore worthy or writing off.
Good for you..keep up the battle
Fair comment mate, we especially shouldn’t
be treating other members of the rugby community like this, good call bringing it up!
Thanks Phil – I am aware that many think we should keep this kind of thing in-house and not ‘air’ it. Not me. I like these sorts of people to get their 15 minutes of fame.
Wow – i have just found this little story: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=381488811990&set=o.66933101331 – can you imagine how many more there are??
Wow! This guy is the lowest of the low, especially with the sponsoring shirts and not coughing up the cash!
Lukey Luke – he is indeed. But it seems that I got him where it hurts last night as he suddenly emailed and told me he would be paying in 3 weeks – we will see. However, – I also want those shirts paying for!
Thanks for your support everyone, I certainly touched a nerve and got a response where the debt recovery company could not. He has now emailed asking for 3 weeks to pay. He seemed unable to deal with my comments on his website and has taken it down.
Jeremy Beynon emailed me in response to my ‘publicity’ and promised he would pay in 3 weeks – that would have been on November 22nd … he didn’t pay. What he did do was delete his Linkedin profile, his gmail account and HeavensGame account – he also took down the website. A little digging came up with his new venture – http://sprouter.com/amelsam – Amelsam is Jeremy Beynon’s new project down in Oz – so just beware. Since running the above post I have found at least another 3 people in rugby that he has done the exact same to. He truly is a despicable individual.
Well done…keep the pressure up…let’s all make it almost impossible for this clown to do business!!!!
Max great article. I’ve worked with JB very closely in the past and have found your story to be very similar to the one I experienced. It is good to see someone step up and something. I know what a pain and an annoyance it can be to deal with that. Any help you may need let me know.
I have not had any contact with Jeremy since last year at this address Heavensgame@heavensgame.com He was here in England and met up with one of the agencies that i work with and received images from them and when he was billed for the images used he never replied to them. There seems to be no sign of him
Hey Max!! I don’t have a story directly related to the sh!tbag you mention, but have had a very similar story happen to me – but after dealing with a guy for 2 years!! It’s a rather sick feeling. I really hope you nail this ar$ehole for what he owes, plus a percentage for the PIA factor!! Good luck!!
Max,
Sorry to hear this. Jeremy has burnt a lot of people in Rugby it seems. I remember others trying to chase him for various reasons and he has gone to ground several times before. Never figured it was over money. He went offline for a few months under the guise of traveling abroad, I wonder if that really happened. Seemed he was always in it for the buck, launching a range of poor quality sites that he wanted to charge for.
I hope this works out for you and I’ll keep an eye for anything I can do to help.
Any luck getting your money yet max?
For me I was the lucky one who got paid, but it took a lot of hard graft. Constant invoices and then threatening to pull the pin. I ended up getting paid and then getting fired at the same time and saying my work wasn’t required. He said quite a few things along the way such as promising season tickets and media passes for certain rugby games and venues. He was a just a load of crock, hope you track him down and get your money.
WOW interesting blog. Not worked for heavensgame in 9 months now and I was just browing the net and looking at the site…which is “under construction”.
I did some work for Jeremy in early last year, and he refused to pay me until I took drastic measures. Another person (addicted to rugby maybe thats you?) and myself were also in the same situation as myself in not being paid.
This guy Jeremy needs to be taken down as he appears to continue to not cough up, interesting that a simple “Heavensgame” search on google and this comes up number 4. He has a number of websites it appears, and I think it is wrong he “employs” people, I feel like paying a hacker to log onto all his sites and completely eradicating everything on his database, I know he has other links now too.
Jeremy was using people from the “sports journalism course” at universities in the UK to do some work expierience for him, sweetened me up a bit, agreed the £15 per game for a report….and paid me once….then I contiuned to do the reports…and was not paid for 3 months, contacted a number of people in Australia, including his sponsors telling him of the situation and eventually got my money.
It started around this time last year for me, started with him not emailing me as I contiuned to do guinness premiership reports….then after a week or so, I was emailing him saying I wouldnt do any more work until I was givent eh £500 he owed me….a few weeks after that and a few more emails from me …he emails me on a gmail address stating he had not recieved any of my emails….I was sending them to the @heavensgame one which he obviously was recieveing…
Ohh I also got the BS story about him and his family being ill, complete BS. Take this guy down at all costs and if anybody is reading NEVER work for this guy!
#stay-well-clear-of-jeremy-beynon.com!
Yeah, yet another one….I did a number of pieces for him after meeting him face-to-face. He said he had serious backing and was willing to pay a decent rate. We shook hands and I got a confirmation e-mail.
Uploaded my material for a couple of months, without getting any payment, then suddenly I was denied access. He asked me to send via e-mail and for a few days put the material up without explaining why I couldn’t access the publisher.
Then it started, I sent a week’s worth of copy and nothing was put up. I said enough was enough, pay me what I’m due and we’ll walk away.
He said he would pay me every penny but I have still not received anything.
I now only work for people who pay me, thank you Mr Beynon….
In a way I guess we all feel the same, at least it’s not just me, but it leaves a very bitter taste that anyone could be so deceitful. Best of luck to all of you – let’s hope this never happens to any of us again.
Oh my lord. I am yet another who was in this same situation, but luckily eventually got my money.
Not only did I encounter all of the above and more, but I even was lucky (UNLUCKY) enough to get a formal job offer, and was given the run around in a manner which I never believed to be possible.
Got all the usual crap about family in hospital, lawyers delaying paperwork and so on.
I actually turned down a couple of legit offers at the end of 2009 cos he had promised me a part time position.
Luckily for me I the experience hasn’t destroyed my passion for rugby writing.
But do not, repeat do not, ever trust Jeremy Beynon.
This makes for very interesting reading.
I used to blog for Jeremy on a regular basis, mainly as a hobby before a little bit of cash work for match reports was offered. I jumped at the opportunity and whilst it was only a feeble amount, it wasn’t paid due to very similar reasons outlined above (IBan numbers etc.)
What is more annoying is the effort I went to for a more recent article looking at funding for development and whether as much was going to grass-roots as fans are being told. As you can imagine, this took up a lot of time and effort, as well as numerous hours worth of research before being assured by Jeremy it would go online after his “lawyers” had looked at it. I was sure there was nothing wrong with it and was eager to get it on the website as I appreciated the exposure previously (which is now clearly thanks to Max’s efforts!).
However, low and behold, the site went awol, Jeremy shut down his twitter account and nothing has been heard from him since.
Sorry to all those who have lost out financially to this joker, hopefully he gets stung at some point in the very near future!
Long story – short… (well I’ll try)… I am sitting at home booked off work due to stress induced sickness. I have just lost my home and luckily found a smaller one for my family and I. Jeremy Beynon’s promises and costs to me in 2010 were the last straw!
I met Jer in 2003 at the Oz RWC when I was the Nike Marketing Manager for Rugby in SA. We hit it off like all rugby ‘brothers’.
Staying in touch on HG.com and part-time blogs and articles for Jer from 2004 to 2010 were some of my most enjoyable moments behind a laptop.
Come 2007 saw me loose a job with (another) Oz firm when they closed their SA office. Thus I was unemployed from 2007 through 2009 and HG was a refuge and also a promise of better things thanks to Jer’s prmise to have me over in Oz some day. He did pay on occassion but I saw a bigger picture.
In 2009 he asked me to head up his international development of HG and promised a monthly salary and also wanted me to find teams he could sponsor. I (stupidly) got the school side I coached to agree to wear HG sponsored kit on their tour of Argentina.
I (again, stupidly) took money from my small business that I had started to pay for the HG kit to be made – against the will of my wife (worst thing to do!).
And, yip – just like the rest of you. I never saw the money from him or the kit sponsorship. This cost me around R35,000-00. Not much in pounds or dollars (around GB7,000-00) but it pretty much sank me due to the fact that I never caught that money up again. I had ‘borrowed from Peter to pay Paul’ within my own business and for HG and lost!
So I now sit in a job that I don’t really feel is worth my skills and am trying really hard to get my business back on its feet. All at the expense of my wife’s trust in me and my family! He had promised that he would pay for me and my family to move to Syndey to grow HG.com. I ended up looking like fool to my wife’s parents and my family… They must have smelt a rat and I ignored all of them!
I agree with those who say I was stupid and should have not been so trusting or naive with money. But when you have a daily conversation and hour-long business calls with someone over 5 years it is hard not to believe them. Especially when it comes to rugby people – because I am an eternal rugby fan. The game gave me all I have in life and I will almost always give back to the game and people in the game as a result!
I even forgave Jer in my heart! I feel sorry for him in a way, I just wish he would have told me he was in trouble or couldn’t pay me.
The game is greater than us all and I think we all learn from these lessons. Some more than others! Max – I did post a message on HG’s Facebook page in 2010 about my issues with Jer in the hope that others would not get burnt. I was upset and tried not to be nasty to him. I feel I lost a mate and a dream – even a bit of confidence in rugby people was lost.
I sincerely hope it doesn’t happen to other people and if Jeremy ever reads this – mate, I feel for you! I have forgiven you and will always be slighlty upset with you but it is NEVER to late to make up with people.
Yours in Rugby

Well, well, well – Jeremy Beynon is back – see his lovely new website http://www.jeremybeynon.com – if you’ve forgotten how his smiley face looks. I saw this site and contacted him immediately to make sure he hadn’t forgotten my £1500. Unfortunately he was off to NZ for a bit of R and R over xmas. He has however just returned and dropped me a line:
“Max, I work everyday at paying back all my debts, I have not forgotten about what I owe you and it will be paid. Regards,…”
As you can imagine, I explained that I didn’t believe him – requesting my money by Friday and he has offered:
“Max, I have no money, I lost my job before xmas and am in no position to pay you by Friday. I am sorry and I will pay all back”
Jeremy will never pay me back – people like him don’t. But I am most saddened by the fact that he thinks the money is the only problem, Jeremy Beynon doesn’t seem to grasp that he has done anything wrong. He thinks it’s fine to offer payment after more than a year of ignoring emails and indeed, never actually intending to pay in the first place.
If you currently do business with Jeremy Beynon of Sydney, Australia – or if indeed you are thinking about it, please be warned – he never pays. He never fulfils any commitment and he lies through his teeth to try and get a leg up from anyone he can get hold of to meet his own ends. While we all are left with work done and no payment – others even more badly treated (see above) – Jeremy Beynon and his family are enjoying the sun down in Sydney, popping over to NZ for xmas.
Well – merry xmas Jeremy Beynon, I am sure you still have that lovely big smile on your face – please – feel free to leave your comment here on the site for all to read.
Look who snaked his way back into the public eye. Shame he still owes my company $3,000. I agree with you Max, I’ve known JB since 2009, and worked with him for the better part of a year, we worked hand-in-hand on HG and other projects. Unlike some others on this post, I cannot forgive him for what he’s done as he’s cost me and my family by not paying what is owed to me. It’s rare that I hold a grudge against someone but this is something that I cannot and will not let go.
For anyone out there who is looking to do business with Jeremy Beynon, I warn them never to trust him, and to avoid him at all cost.
